I am looking for a place to ride a train and then take the entire day to ski back to my original destination?
Filed Under Destinations | 3 Comments
I was told that there is a place in the netherlands where I can ride a train to go skiing and then ski back and it will take all day as you stop at villages along the way. I would like to know if anyone can give me a link or a name to research this further

What kind of car should I rent for a ski holiday? Do I need to rent one at all?
Filed Under Destinations | 4 Comments
I’m in the beginning stages of planning a ski and snowboard vacation for the end of the year. I live in California, but I’m planning on visiting either Colorado or Utah (not sure which yet!) My question is this: I’m going to be flying to my destination, but do I need to rent a car to get between my hotel and the ski resorts or can I just use shuttles? (I’m not even sure if I’m going to stick to one mountain yet or try a few different ones, so I might need to travel between THEM as well.) Also, if I absolutely do need to rent a car, what kind should I get? There will only be two of us, but we’ll have all our gear.
Thanks for your advice!

Should I ride to the mountains in an unsafe car with a 40% chance of snow?
Filed Under Destinations | 8 Comments
I’ve committed to an annual MLK ski trip with a large group of friends only to find out today that my ride is with someone who drives an Audi S4 with performance tires and no tire chains. There is currently predicted a 30% to 40% chance of snow during the drive to the destination.
For reasons that I won’t explain here, this ride is my only chance to take the trip.
Due to his summer only performance tires, if there is heavy snow we will become stuck, be forced to turn back by the highway patrol, or possibly crash.
Based on my experience with this drive, there’s an 80% chance that nothing will happen and everything will be fine, but there’s also a 20% chance of catastrophic failure.
Would you take the chance or cancel your attendance missing a trip that is likely to be fun and letting down the friends that are counting you to be there?

What ever happened to “global warming will wreck the ski industry?”?
Filed Under Destinations | 4 Comments
Remember when the AGW alarmists were predicting that global warming would ring the death knell of the ski industry?
If you don’t, here’s a link to one example of such baseless alarmism:
http://www.tahoedailytribune.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?Site=TD&Date=20030115&Category=NEWS&ArtNo=301150101&Ref=AR
Apparently for the last two years, and three out of four years, the ski season has been characterized by ideal conditions - cold with snow.

So, what happened to the cries of alarm? Why are they among the many global warming predictions that have failed to come to fruition?
Or…. is THIS what they meant? Is the climate threat to the ski industry the number of days in the season when it will be too COLD to ski?

dj I live in NE - Mass. was hit harder economically than much of the country in the late 1980s / early 1990s - simply put, DEMAND fell. Don’t rewrite history.
And yes, condos went up - ski condos, like the ones that now adorn the land on which I used to cross country ski, at Waterville, when I was in high school in the 1980s. They don’t build condos on mountain slopes!
